About me

Where and When

I was born in 1983 in Maceió, Brazil, where most of my family live. Maceió is the capital of Alagoas state, and its natural beauty is stunning (see some google images and you will certainly agree - click here).

However, when I was 19 I left this paradise to study Computer Science at Federal University of Campina Grande, in the city of Campina Grande (in the state of Paraíba), 320 Km far away from Maceió. Campina Grande is the place in Brazil with the highest concentration of Ph.Ds (one per 669 inhabitants, five times the national average), and is historically famous for its technological development. The city was the first location in northeastern Brazil to receive a computer and nowadays has more than 100 software companies, whose business is mostly based on worldwide software exportation.

After completing my B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Campina Grande, I moved to Recife, another beautiful and high-tech city in Brazil, and the capital of Pernambuco state. There I worked for 3 years as a Software Engineer at the Information Technology Agency of Pernambuco State. Then I moved to Leeds (UK) in 2009 to start my Ph.D. in the School of Computing at the University of Leeds. The School is ranked in the top 10 computing departments in the UK, based on the quality of its research (latest UK Government Research Assessment Exercise) and 80% of its research activity is rated internationally excellent or world-leading.

My Family

I've been happily married to Carolina since 2006. She is also from Maceió. I am also the dad of a cute little boy who was born in Leeds in March 2011.

Other Activities

Beyond my fascination for Computer Science and for doing research, I love Photography (I've posted some pictures in my Gallery on this Web site), cooking, making trips, walking, cycling, watching films and socialise. Although I am Brazilian, I don't like Feijoada, but I love Brazilian Barbecue (Churrasco).
